ALEBTONG, UGANDA – Alebtong District Local Government Chairperson Mr. Odongo DK has come forward to dismiss claims linking his leadership to the 165 million shilling scandal that led to the remand of the District Health Officer (DHO), Dr. Odung Tony, by the State House Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.
In a press release issued on 25 February 2026, Odongo clarified that the alleged misappropriation occurred in the 2019/2020 financial year—before the current district administration took office in 2021. He emphasized that his leadership inherited an abandoned project and took corrective measures to ensure completion of the health centres in question.
Project Background and Contractor Abandonment:
The controversy stems from a contract awarded to Otada Co. Ltd by the central government for the construction of Awei Health Centre and Angetta Health Centre. The company received an advance payment but reportedly abandoned the sites midway, leaving the projects incomplete. Otada Co. Ltd allegedly exhibited similar misconduct in Amolatar District, raising questions about its accountability.
When the current leadership assumed office, the District Executive Committee (DEC) reviewed the project and resolved to procure a new contractor, Wangi Co. Ltd, which successfully completed the health centres using the remaining funds and materials left on site.
Leadership’s Commitment to Accountability:
Odongo defended his administration’s transparency, stating,
“The current leadership acted responsibly to safeguard public funds and ensure the completion of these critical health facilities for our people. Blaming us for a scandal that predates our term is not only misleading but politically motivated.”
He called for fairness in the ongoing investigations, urging the Anti-Corruption Court to also pursue Otada Co. Ltd’s management, who, he argues, must answer for abandoning government contracts after receiving payments.
“Justice should not only focus on public officials but also on private entities that receive public funds and fail to deliver,” Odongo stressed.
Politically Motivated Allegations:
With social media ablaze with accusations against the current district leadership, Odongo dismissed the claims as “baseless and distorted.” He insisted that accountability should instead be directed at the previous leadership that oversaw the initial contract and disbursement of funds.
Call for Calm Amid Investigations:
While reaffirming his commitment to fighting corruption, Odongo urged the public to remain patient and allow the judiciary to conduct a fair and impartial investigation.
“We stand for transparency and will continue serving Alebtong with integrity,” he concluded.
The case continues as stakeholders await further developments from the Anti-Corruption Court.
