Besigye’s Son Appeals to Gen. Muhoozi for Father’s Release After Courtroom Collapse

An emotional appeal by Adam Ampa Besigye, the son of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has added a new dimension to the growing concern over his father’s health after the veteran politician reportedly collapsed during a High Court session while standing trial on treason charges.

The dramatic courtroom incident has sparked widespread concern among family members, political allies, supporters and human rights advocates, with renewed calls for Dr. Besigye to receive adequate medical attention.

The incident occurred before Justice Emmanuel Baguma, where Dr. Besigye strongly objected to the continuation of his trial. He argued that several unresolved legal matters should be addressed before the case proceeds.

According to the defence, these include a pending bail application, disclosure of prosecution evidence, allegations of harassment against members of his legal team, unresolved constitutional issues and concerns over his right to a fair hearing.

Following the courtroom incident, Adam Ampa Besigye issued a public appeal to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, urging him to allow his father access to independent medical care and to release him from custody.

In his message, Adam said healthcare is a fundamental human right and warned that any further delay in treatment could endanger his father’s life.

The appeal comes as concern continues to mount over Dr. Besigye’s health and the impact it could have on the ongoing legal proceedings.

The case remains one of Uganda’s most closely watched, with observers awaiting the court’s decisions on the outstanding preliminary legal issues, including the bail application and other constitutional matters raised by the defence.

Questions also remain over how Dr. Besigye’s medical condition may affect the progress of the trial as the legal process continues.

The authorities have yet to publicly respond to Adam Ampa Besigye’s appeal or indicate whether any changes will be made regarding Dr. Besigye’s medical care or detention conditions.
