Bukedea, Uganda — A group of Catholic believers of Bukedea District have written to the Apostolic Nuncio, through the Chairperson of the Catholic Episcopal Conference, Bishop Anthony Zziwa, Archbishop of Kampala His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, and Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Eciru of Soroti Catholic Diocese, requesting the immediate end of communion rites for Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
“We, the Catholics of Bukedea, write to you as the Papal representative in Uganda to petition your holy office on the matter of communion rites for Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
“Catholics are universally taught through the catechism about the holy sacraments taken upon fulfilling certain conditions. In this particular regard is the holy sacrament of Communion, which Speaker Among has been shown on TV and on social media partaking in during Holy Mass.
“This has left us, the Catholic believers in Bukedea and the country at large, shocked and questioning the strictness and commitment to Catholic doctrine of bishops and priests who offer Among communion.”
The petition letter added that there is fear that because Among walks about with huge amounts of cash, perhaps she could be buying her way to the holy altar of Communion.
“We are calling upon the Holy See to investigate all bishops and priests who have offered communion to Anita Among in order to establish whether this has been an act done in ignorance or one induced by bribery.”
The petitioners claim that Anita Among’s impunity in leadership and faith brings shame and scorn to the Catholic Church, and that it is shocking that Anita Among abuses Catholic rites in the full glare of cameras and no action is taken by those in authority.
“We are petitioning that the Church makes a statement clarifying Anita’s communion rites and the need to issue stern guidelines to politicians and the laity. We are petitioning that the Church stops forthwith according Among communion on the following grounds,” the letter partly reads.
The petition, signed by eleven believers, claims the Speaker is married to a Muslim believer and that she should be excommunicated from the Catholic faith.
