Absa Bank Uganda has declared the sequel to its Absa-KH3 7 Hills Run in collaboration with the Kampala Hash House Harriers (KH3) in a delightful blend of sweat, sneakers, and social responsibility. This philanthropic marathon, scheduled for Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Kololo Airstrip, aims to conquer not just the seven iconic hills of Kampala but also the hurdles that hinder girl-child education in Uganda.
The decision to dedicate this 21km run to the cause is commendable, given the multifaceted challenges faced by Ugandan girls in pursuit of education. From poverty and cultural norms to early marriages and menstrual hygiene management, the obstacles are as varied as the hills themselves. Absa Bank Uganda, in its quest to be a “force for good,” asserts that education is a fundamental right, regardless of gender.
Despite skepticism often accompanying corporate initiatives, the inaugural run held on May 28, 2023, was an undisputed success. With over 2,600 participants pounding the pavement, the run not only generated a whopping UGX 200 million but also directly impacted over 2,500 girls. Emboldened by this triumph, the 2024 edition aspires to elevate the bar in championing the cause of girl-child education.
Helen Basuuta Nangonzi, the Marketing and Customer Experience Director of Absa Bank Uganda, expressed pride in providing a platform where individuals, corporations, and running clubs can positively contribute to a pressing societal issue. Nangonzi highlighted the event’s significance, stating, “As a bank, we are building a platform where the public can contribute positively towards a pertinent issue affecting our society.”
Beyond the altruistic motive, the 2024 run promises to be more than just a sprint for a noble cause. Open to a diverse array of runners, from professionals to enthusiasts, the event invites participants to vie for prizes in various categories. It’s not just about the run; it’s about fostering team spirit, promoting health, and indulging in the universal joy of competition.
For those eager to lace up their running shoes and support the cause, the kits for the run come with a price tag of UGX 30,000 each. The payment process is as diverse as the participants themselves, with options ranging from Mobile Money transactions to online payments through VISA cards or conventional payments at Absa Bank branches countrywide. A convenient system that ensures nobody is left out of this run for education.
