Fishing Communities Reap Benefits of Conservation in Lake Edward

Illegal fishing practices and the misuse of fishing gear in Lake Edward had severely depleted fish stocks, endangering the livelihoods of communities reliant on the lake. Recognizing this threat, the government implemented the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) to oversee the lake’s activities and preserve its resources. This intervention has yielded positive outcomes, as recounted by fishermen during a recent visit by FPU commander Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa to Rwenshama landing site in Rukungiri district.

Abdul Kiiza, the chairperson of Rwenshama landing site, expressed gratitude for the improved fishing conditions brought about by the FPU’s regulations. He noted that fishermen are now able to secure significant catches, allowing them to support their families by meeting essential needs like school fees, medical expenses, and housing.

Kenneth Nuwagaba, the Rwenshama parish LC2 chairperson, highlighted the positive economic impact of the FPU, noting that fishermen who had previously struggled with loans are now able to repay them. The sentiment was echoed by Chris Kagayano, the Bwambara sub-county LC3 chairperson, who observed increased compliance with fishing regulations among the local fishing community.

However, challenges persist, particularly concerning cross-border fishing activities with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As Uganda prepares for joint fishing initiatives with the DRC, concerns have been raised about illegal fishing practices and the need for stronger enforcement measures.

Lt. Atim Mbaziira, the sector commander of the Fisheries Protection Unit responsible for lakes George and Edward, emphasized the importance of equipping enforcement teams with faster boats to effectively combat illegal fishing activities. She stressed the need for enhanced security along the border to prevent incursions by unauthorized individuals.

Lt. Col. Tukahirwa reiterated the importance of ongoing engagement with DRC leadership to promote responsible fishing practices and deter encroachments into Ugandan waters. She emphasized the mutual benefit of preserving the lake’s resources for both nations.

Additionally, Tukahirwa called upon local leaders to support the FPU in enforcing regulations, underscoring the role of community collaboration in conservation efforts. She pledged to secure a speedboat to bolster FPU activities and enhance their capacity to safeguard Lake Edward’s ecosystem.
