Popular musician Moses Ssali, better known as Bebe Cool, has issued a notice of intention to sue Airtel Uganda, seeking compensation of Shs200 million for alleged data depletion that purportedly disrupted an important business meeting conducted via Zoom.
According to the notice sent to Airtel Uganda on February 14, 2024, Bebe Cool asserts that on January 16, 2024, a significant amount of data, equivalent to 22 Gigabytes (valued at Shs50,000), was depleted within a mere 4-hour period without any reasonable explanation for its usage.
In his demand, Bebe Cool insists on a refund for the unused data, amounting to Shs100 million, to cover travel expenses incurred as a result of the meeting’s disruption, and an additional Shs100 million for the inconvenience caused.
The notice states, “This unethical data depletion disrupted my important Zoom business meeting scheduled for that same night,” adding, “As a result, I had to incur travel expenses with my team for a physical meeting in Lagos.”
Further elaborating on the incident, Bebe Cool explains, “Around 10:00 pm, I briefly opened TikTok for about five minutes, using no more than 300MBs. I then charged my phone in preparation for the Zoom meeting. To my surprise, at 12:34 am, without any further usage, I received an alert that only 5649MBs remained, with over 17GBs depleted.”
Bebe Cool alleges that the remaining data was depleted within two minutes, describing the situation as “an act of unjustified self-enrichment and a breach of our prepaid agreement.”
He warns of potential legal action if Airtel fails to meet his demands. This incident comes in the wake of a similar complaint raised by musician Priscilla Zawedde (Azawi).
