City Tycoon Mukesh Faces Court Today Over Sh221 Million Fraud Charges

Businessman Mukesh Shukla, known for his bid for the Nakawa West Parliament seat, is scheduled to appear in Nakawa Chief Magistrates’ Court today, Monday, for a key hearing in his legal battle. Shukla faces serious allegations of fraud, specifically for reportedly obtaining shillings 221 million from Alvi Auto Village Limited under false pretenses.

According to the charges, between November 2020 and November 2021, Shukla is accused of deceiving the company by pretending to lease two plots of land that he did not actually own. The case is set to be heard before Chief Magistrate Erias Kakooza. Shukla, who is currently out on bail set at shillings 10 million, will appear in court with Judith Ayebare, the manager of Shumuk Investments Ltd, and Dharamdip Kadikar, the accountant for Shumuk Group of Companies.

In the previous court session, senior state attorney Mariam Kluthum from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) informed the court that investigations into the matter have been completed. Kluthum stated that if the parties involved do not reach an out-of-court settlement, the case will proceed to a full hearing.

The charges against Shukla and his co-defendants include obtaining money by false pretenses, which under the Penal Code Act carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment. Additionally, they face charges of conspiracy to defraud, which could result in a three-year jail term upon conviction.

The outcome of today’s court session will determine the next steps in this high-profile case.
