The trial of Charles Olim, also known as Sipapa, along with his wife Shamira Rukia Nakiyemba, has been postponed by the High Court for a month. The couple faces 13 charges including aggravated robbery and money laundering.
Sipapa appeared at the High Court for the case hearing on Wednesday but the trial was adjourned to March 11 due to the unavailability of Judge Micheal Elubu, who was handling another criminal session in Mukono.
Meanwhile, the prosecution informed the court of their intention to present forensic exhibits and documents related to the crime scene.
Prosecutors claim to have gathered ample evidence implicating Sipapa and his wife in the alleged robbery of approximately Shs1.6 billion from South Sudanese businessman Jacob Arok Nul Mayendit. They allege that the couple, along with others, engaged in money laundering activities in Kampala on the night of August 29, 2022.
According to the prosecution, Sipapa, a businessman dealing in gold and cars, and Nakiyemba, a designer, robbed Mul and Mary Ateng of cash, mobile phones, a flat screen TV, and other items, using a substance to render Arok unconscious.
During investigations, detectives tracked a signal from one of the stolen iPhones to Sipapa’s residence in Buwate, Wakiso District. A search conducted there led to the recovery of significant evidential material, including cash, electronic devices, and car accessories.
Furthermore, it is alleged that the accused attempted to conceal ownership of certain vehicles by respraying them and removing identifying stickers.
The prosecution intends to rely on various pieces of evidence, including search certificates, medical reports, and agreements, to support their case.
