The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) has expressed worries about the increasing number of deaths resulting from domestic violence. The CID report reveals that incidents involve children killing their parents, as well as spouses killing each other. The report indicates that the elderly and females are the most affected by these tragic events.

One recent incident of domestic violence took place in Kateramo trading center, Kikongo parish in Rukungiri District. Amos Tumworobere allegedly hacked his wife, Annet Kyomugisha, to death with a machete, leaving their four-year-old son Anderson with his mother’s lifeless body in a pool of blood. Another case involved Yusuf Kyeswa, who was arrested for allegedly murdering his step-mother, Kevina Nakanwagi, with the motive of stealing her three million shillings. He then disposed of her body in a pit latrine in Nakyeeke village, Kayiri parish in Mukono district.

Renowned psychologist, Prof Edward Bantu, has offered insight into these incidents, suggesting that deep-seated anger and frustration may be underlying causes. He also highlighted that some cases may result from unmet financial needs and encouraged couples to openly discuss their financial challenges. In some instances, he mentioned that violent behavior might be influenced by genetic factors in a person’s lineage.

In a separate incident, Majid Malekwa allegedly hacked his wife, Asia Nalumansi, following a dispute while they were burning charcoal in the forest. CID reports suggest that financial difficulties, isolation, and mental disorders could be contributing factors in these cases.

There were other tragic domestic violence incidents, including one where Richard Byaruhanga assaulted his 96-year-old grandmother Anyesi Tiberebwa, resulting in her death. Additionally, in Kabarole district, Peter Mwesige, a 42-year-old boda boda rider, lost his life in a domestic dispute involving his wife Winnie Kobusinge and Bernado Musinguzi.

The report underscores the need for increased awareness and efforts to address domestic violence issues to prevent further tragic outcomes.
