A 20 year old man is under police investigation for allegedly hacking his mother to death over a dispute regarding supper. The horrifying event took place in Gulu City’s East Division on Sunday, October 29, at approximately 11:20 pm, sending shockwaves through the Laroo-Pece Division neighborhood.

The suspect, identified as Dickson Okane, currently remains in police custody as authorities piece together the details of this gruesome incident. According to David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police spokesperson, Okane allegedly used an axe to carry out the fatal attack on his mother, Betty Adoch, aged 48. The case has been officially registered under vide CRB 361/2023 at Gulu East Police Post.

Law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the scene of the crime, where they discovered the murder weapon – the axe used in the alleged homicide. Investigations are ongoing, and the body of the victim has been transported to the Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination to provide further insights into this tragic event.

Residents in the area have been left deeply disturbed by the circumstances surrounding the incident. Santo Okech, the LC1 of Bar Cell, recounted the events that unfolded. He explained that Okane had returned home and demanded a meal from his mother. However, his impatience grew as the meal took longer than expected. This impatience ultimately led to a horrific act of violence when Okane attacked his mother with the axe, striking her on the neck and forehead.

Stephen Mwaka, another resident of the same village, disclosed that Okane had a history of violence towards his mother, but she had intervened on multiple occasions to reconcile with her son. Mwaka revealed that Okane was struggling with substance abuse, which likely contributed to his aggressive behavior towards his mother. The tragic culmination of events has left the community in mourning and disbelief.

As of the time of reporting, the suspect remained in police custody, where he was undergoing interrogation.
