Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament and former Agago North Member of Parliament, Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo, is recovering after surviving a car crash in Luwero District.
The incident occurred when the car he was driving collided with a stationary sugarcane truck that had run out of fuel.
According to Sam Twineamazima, the Savannah Region Police spokesperson, Prof. Latigo sustained minor injuries in the accident.
The accident took place on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at approximately 11:58 pm at Lubenge swamp along the Gulu-Kampala highway in Luwero district. It involved two vehicles: a Tata truck with registration number UBJ 070B, belonging to Victoria Sugar Factory (whose driver is still at large), and a silver Mercedes Benz with registration number UBG 961D driven by Prof. Latigo.
The truck, loaded with sugarcane from Masindi to Luwero, had run out of fuel and blocked traffic from Gulu to Kampala. Prof. Ogenga’s car subsequently collided with the stationary truck, resulting in his injuries.
Prof. Latigo was promptly taken to St. Ceaser Lacor Hospital for treatment, where doctors are attending to him. The scene of the accident was investigated, a sketch map was created, both vehicles were towed to Kakoge Police Station’s parking yard for inspection, and a case of a serious accident was registered. Relevant statements were recorded, and the search for the truck driver is ongoing.
This marks the fifth vehicular incident involving the former MP. In 2019, while serving as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, his vehicle was involved in a crash that resulted in the deaths of his driver, Sam Tabu, and a young lady believed to be a close associate of Prof. Innocent Awor. In January 2011, Latigo was also involved in another incident in which his vehicle struck and killed a cyclist in Kiryandongo District.
