The police have disclosed the recovery of a significant portion of the funds stolen from Busiro East Member of Parliament, Mr. Medard Ssegona. The incident, which occurred last week, involved the theft of Shs118 million from the MP’s vehicle while it was at a washing bay in Kakeeka Zone, Rubaga Division, Kampala.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, addressed journalists in Kampala on Monday, providing details of the operation. He informed that law enforcement officers, particularly those from Rubaga and Old Kampala, collaborated to apprehend suspects and recover an amount totaling Shs 85 million belonging to Mr. Medard Ssegona, a resident of Nakasozi-Buddo in Kyengera Town Council and the incumbent Member of Parliament representing Busiro East County.
According to Owoyesigyire, the incident unfolded on March 8 when Mr. Ssegona entrusted his vehicle to a washing bay located at Saga in Kakeeka zone. The car was scheduled for cleaning, and Mr. Ssegona handed it over to an individual identified as Asiimwe. However, instead of proceeding with the washing task, the individuals involved purportedly conducted a search within the vehicle, leading to the discovery of a substantial sum of money amounting to 118 million shillings. Subsequently, the cash was pilfered, leaving the vehicle untouched.
The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies resulted in the identification and apprehension of suspects connected to the theft, along with the recovery of a significant portion of the stolen funds.
According to the Police Statement, the successful operation so far shows the importance of prompt and efficient police action in addressing cases of theft and financial crime within the community. Additionally, it highlights the significance of public cooperation and vigilance in combating such unlawful activities.
The investigation into the matter remains ongoing, according to the police spokesperson, with authorities committed to bringing all individuals involved in the theft to justice.
