The Sheema District Police have launched a manhunt for eight suspects who escaped from Sheema Central Police Station in the early hours of August 1, 2024. The escape occurred around 3:20 a.m. when the suspects managed to break free through the aluminum louvres on a toilet window.

Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson Martial Tumusiime reported that the suspects removed the louvres, creating enough space to slip through. The individuals who escaped have been identified as Akampa Jocknius, Matovu Hakim, Mukasa Aggrey, Asingwire Musinguzi, Byamukama Ambrose, Mpumwire Benson, Tugume Ashraf, and Accum Clinton.

Six of the escaped suspects were facing theft charges, while the remaining two were charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Tumusiime indicated that Accum Clinton is believed to have played a significant role in planning the escape.

In response to the incident, Sheema Deputy Resident Commissioner Sam Orikunda announced that seven police officers on duty during the escape have been detained and charged with neglect of duty. The suspects exploited vulnerabilities in the newly constructed police cells, which are not yet fully operational.

Orikunda assured the public that the police are actively working to re-arrest the suspects. He urged the community to cooperate with law enforcement and report any information that might lead to the suspects’ capture.

“Our detectives are on the ground, and we are confident that we will recapture the suspects soon,” Orikunda said. He emphasized that the public should not panic and should assist the police in their efforts.
