On Monday, December 18, 2023, a fire at Wabiduku Market in Balintuma Zone, Kiwatule, resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The fire, suspected to have started in one of the temporary wooden structures, quickly spread to nearby areas. The victims’ bodies were recovered, burnt beyond recognition, prompting an ongoing investigation led by the Kampala Metropolitan Police.

Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire reported that the fire was first responded to by territorial Police at Kira Road around 2:00 pm. Two bodies were initially recovered in the afternoon, with the third found in the evening. Despite the dedicated efforts of the fire prevention and rescue team, some areas continued to experience pockets of fire into the evening.

The deceased individuals have been respectfully conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination. As part of the investigation, DNA analysis will be conducted on collected samples to determine the identities of the victims. Owoyesigyire assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
