Relatives and friends gathered outside King’s Park Rugby Club in Bweyogerere on January 21, 2024, mourning the death of Nekeon Buruga, who was fatally shot on Saturday. The suspect, identified as lawyer Sam Ahamya, has been detained, and the alleged murder weapon has been recovered by the police. However, questions arise surrounding the incident, as Ahamya claims it was a mistake.

Ahamya is accused of shooting the unarmed private security guard, Nekeon Buruga, at King’s Park Rugby Club in Wakiso District. Despite Ahamya asserting that the shooting was unintentional, the police are holding him on murder charges.

According to police sources, Ahamya explained that he did not realize the pistol’s magazine was inserted when he signed it out. Attempting safety precautions, he believed the pistol was empty, but it discharged a bullet, injuring the guard.

Ahamya, a rugby enthusiast, had attended the Uganda Cup Rugby finals at King’s Park Rugby Club. The victim’s body, Nekeon Buruga, was delivered to Kampala Capital City Authority City Mortuary for a post-mortem.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed Ahamya’s detention and the recovery of the weapon. Ahamya reportedly used a privately-owned gun, held for more than three years. The police are investigating why he didn’t realize the pistol was loaded and why he tested the rifle while pointing it towards the security guard.

The suspect left the gun with the security officer at the checkpoint when entering the rugby club for the game. Upon returning, he picked up the gun, subjected it to safety precautions, and allegedly shot the guard.

Eyewitness accounts provide conflicting narratives, with one stating a scuffle ensued when the guard blocked Ahamya from entering the club with the pistol. The suspect refused to hand over the gun, resulting in the shooting. Police officers at the scene disarmed Ahamya and made the arrest.

Owoyesigyire urged witnesses to come forward with information to assist in the investigation. The police will reconstruct the incident to determine whether it was an accident or intentional.
