Police have released Mr. Sam Ahamya, the lawyer accused of fatally shooting Nekeon Buruga, an unarmed security guard, at Kings Park Rugby Club in Kakajjo Zone, Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality, two weeks ago. The case has taken a new turn as relatives of the deceased provided additional statements defending the suspect.
A police source, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, revealed that Mr. Ahamya was granted a police bond over the weekend. The Criminal Investigations Directorate headquarters called for the case file after the deceased’s relatives stated that the alleged shooter was innocent.
Efforts to obtain an update on the case from Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Mr. Patrick Onyango have been unsuccessful despite promises in the last two days.
On the day of the incident, Mr. Ahamya attended the Uganda Cup finals at Kings Park Rugby Club, where Heathens beat Rams 57 to 22. He handed over a pistol at the entrance, which he picked up after the match. Mr. Ahamya claimed that he was unaware the pistol’s magazine was inserted when he signed it out. Attempting safety precautions, he unintentionally discharged a bullet, injuring the guard.
Contradicting accounts emerged, with a witness stating that the suspect refused to surrender his gun at the club entrance, leading to a scuffle and the fatal shooting. The police reported a different narrative from their on-site officers.
The police have submitted the case file to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for a determination on whether to charge the suspect with murder or treat the incident as a mistake.
