Investigation Launched After Suspected Poisoning Incident at Jinja Funeral Claims Lives

Three individuals lost their lives and over 100 others were admitted to various health facilities following an alleged poisoning incident at a funeral in Bukasami village, Buyengo town council, Jinja district.

The deceased include 20-year-old Faisal Magumba, four-year-old Suleiman Byanguwa, and six-year-old Shamim Nangobi. Reports indicate that mourners fell ill after consuming food served during the funeral of late Ahamad Magumba, the county khadhi of Buyengo.

Affected individuals began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, stomach aches, diarrhea, and vomiting, prompting them to seek medical attention. The situation worsened overnight, leading to the transfer of critically ill patients to Jinja regional referral hospital for further treatment due to limited space and medical supplies.

Salima Nabirye, one of the affected individuals, highlighted the traditional practice of sharing meals with the bereaved family at funerals, expressing concern over the incident, which has sparked suspicion within the village.

Despite challenges in accessing medical supplies, efforts are underway to transport affected persons to health facilities across Busoga sub-region. Moses Batwala, Jinja district L.C.V chairperson, emphasized the need for coordinated transportation to facilitate the movement of patients.

Authorities have called upon the police to investigate the matter, seeking justice for the families of the deceased and affected individuals. Richard Gulume, Jinja resident district commissioner, confirmed the dispatch of health and police teams to collect samples for investigation purposes.
