Police authorities in Kabale District have taken a female resident of Rwakakyerengye Village, Bugarama Parish, Kaharo Sub-county into custody on suspicion of her involvement in the death of her 25-year-old son.
The Kigezi regional police commander, Elly Maate, has identified the arrested individual as Resta Twekasomuhangi, while the deceased has been named as Richard Turinawe, who lived in the same village.
According to Mr. Maate, the allegations suggest a history of domestic violence involving the deceased and his parents. Reports of such incidents have allegedly been filed with local leaders and law enforcement. On April 11, at approximately 2 p.m., the situation escalated when the deceased reportedly attacked his stepfather, Sinema Wensislus, and inflicted severe injuries, including biting off his mouth.
The police spokesman elaborated further, stating that Wensislus and Twekasomuhangi, along with other family members, decided to take action due to the severity of the situation. They reportedly enlisted the help of motorcycle taxi riders from Nyakigugwe stage, who apprehended Turinawe and restrained him on a kiosk belonging to his mother’s vegetable vending business.
Subsequently, it is alleged that the stepfather, together with others including a stepbrother identified as Mugisha, proceeded to assault Turinawe with a hoe handle. The assault reportedly continued until Turinawe pleaded for water to drink.
The stepfather eventually untied Turinawe, who then staggered to a nearby water tap at Nyakigugwe Primary School. However, upon drinking water, he collapsed and died on the spot.
Following the tragic incident, Wensislus and Twekasomuhangi arranged for a coffin, and Turinawe’s body was buried on Friday at 8 a.m.
Local residents and community leaders reported the matter to the Kaharo Police station, which subsequently informed the authorities at the Kabale police station. Detectives from Kabale were dispatched to the crime scene, leading to the arrest of Twekasomuhangi, while efforts to apprehend other suspects are ongoing.
The case has been registered as a murder by mob action at the Kabale police station, and investigations into the matter continue as the authorities seek to unravel the circumstances surrounding Turinawe’s tragic demise.
