Police in Kanungu have apprehended a 24-year-old man, Alex Byamukama, on suspicion of defiling two young girls, aged 10 and 11, who attend Bihomborwa Primary School. Both the victims and the suspect are residents of Bihomborwa village in Kanungu district.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, stated that on October 15, 2023, at approximately 1:00 pm, the two victims, along with four other girls, went into the woods to gather firewood. Upon their return, the suspect accused them of damaging Jane’s bean plants.

According to Maate, the suspect separated the two young victims from the older girls and instructed them to accompany him as a punishment to collect grass. Once in the woods, he allegedly restrained the victims and sexually assaulted both of them.

After the incident, the victims managed to escape and reported the matter to their parent, Jacenta Nyiransaba. She, in turn, contacted the police, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect.

Statements have been obtained from the victims, and investigations are currently underway.

The case has been officially registered as aggravated defilement at Kanungu District police station under the reference number CRB 333/2023.
