Investigations are expected to uncover more about the group’s network, ensuring that stolen electricity materials no longer disrupt public services or endanger community safety.

(Mukono) – A joint police and UPDF operation in Katega village, Mukono District, on November 15, 2024, led to the arrest of five suspects accused of stealing electricity wires and equipment. The suspects were caught red handed with stolen materials, including electric wires and UMEME uniforms, following intelligence reports about their activities.

The operation was launched at 12:25 PM after police received credible intelligence about the group. Police and UPDF officers moved swiftly to apprehend the suspects in Kyampisi sub-county, recovering critical evidence. Among the items seized were two rows of ABC conductor wires, climbing gear, and utility uniforms.

The suspects, identified as Ntale Peter, Kyalisima Adolf, Hamis Kaye Rashid, Kajubi Isa, and Nabulya Miracle, were arrested at different locations. A search of Rashid’s vehicle, registration UBQ585K, revealed the stolen electric wires. Further investigations led to the discovery of UMEME uniforms, climbing shoes, belts, and other tools at Peter’s residence.

The suspects are currently in custody, awaiting formal charges. Police intervened to prevent a mob from attacking the suspects during the operation, securing the scene to ensure safety.

This is not the first time Ntale Peter has been linked to similar crimes. He was previously arrested in April 2023 for theft and vandalism but was released on bail. Investigators believe Peter plays a central role in orchestrating wire thefts in Mukono District and nearby areas.

During the recent operation, officers intercepted a Noah vehicle (registration UBQ585K) carrying two suspects, Kajubi Isa and Nabulya Miracle. The two attempted to flee upon spotting security personnel but were captured. Stolen wires were found in the vehicle. Further connections to past vandalism incidents in Kyampisi sub-county have been established, including Kajubi’s involvement in a theft on November 4, 2024.

Additionally, a motorcycle linked to Kyalisima Adolf was found loaded with UMEME uniforms and climbing equipment, strengthening evidence against the group. Police have noted the recurring pattern of vandalism and are intensifying efforts to dismantle the theft ring.

This crackdown highlights the persistent issue of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure in Mukono and the determination of law enforcement to address it. Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement has pledged to bring all culprits to justice.
