The police have denounced a violent mob attack that led to the death of Officer No. 75290 PC Chemonges Suleiman, a 28-year-old officer stationed at Bisheshe Police Post in Ibanda District. The incident occurred as the officer guarded the funeral of Razaro Kahangire, a prisoner whose death in custody sparked public outrage.

How It Happened:

Razaro Kahangire, a 45-year-old man awaiting trial over a land dispute, fell ill while held at Nyabuhikye Government Prison in Ibanda District. His wife urgently pleaded with police to release him for medical treatment, but officials refused. Hours later, Kahangire died in custody.

His death angered local residents, who accused police of neglect. Tensions mirrored past cases involving figures like opposition leader Besigye and the late Kawempe MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, where public distrust of authorities led to unrest.

During Kahangire’s burial, a grieving mob turned on PC Chemonges Suleiman, who was assigned to guard the funeral. The crowd, seeking revenge for Kahangire’s death, attacked and killed the officer in what police called a “senseless act of violence.”

Authorities have vowed to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice. The tragedy highlights growing tensions between communities and law enforcement in cases involving custody-related deaths.
