(Ntungamo) – The sleepy town of Nyamunuka in Ntungamo District woke up to quite a drama on August 22, 2024.  A resident, Nasumba Hawa, reported the mysterious disappearance of her speakers and TV. Now, in a country where entertainment systems are as prized as a juicy Matooke meal, this was no small matter.

The police, upon receiving the report, unleashed a four legged detective on the scent trail, and what followed was nothing short of remarkable. The dog, with the determination of a boda-boda rider dodging traffic, led the officers straight to a bar owned by one Tumanyanire. But this wasn’t just any bar; it was more like a treasure chest for stolen goods. Imagine the surprise when the officers found Tumanyanire still cozied up in bed with his wife, Katushabe, blissfully unaware that their secret stash was about to be uncovered.

With a search warrant in hand and a police dog at the ready, the officers began their search of Tumanyanire’s bar. The scene played out like one of those old Luganda ebony dramas, with the sniffer dog leading the way. Tucked away among the bar’s usual clutter, were Hawa’s missing TV and speakers, along with some rather suspicious looking breaking tools. It turns out that Tumanyanire wasn’t just serving drinks; he was serving up stolen goods as well.

Tumanyanire and his wife, Katushabe, were promptly arrested. Now, instead of pouring pints, they were about to pour out their side of the story to the police.

Meanwhile, just when you thought things couldn’t get any stranger, the police dog’s cousin in Buyende District was making headlines of its own. On August 24, 2024, in a scene that could only happen in Uganda, a bar in Gwase Trading Center was raided—not by the police, but by thieves with a taste for alcohol. They made off with three crates of beer and cartons of waragi, leaving the bar owner, Waiwe Stone, with nothing but empty shelves and a tearful story.

A trusty canine detective was put on the case once again. Deployed at the scene, the dog sniffed out the trail faster than you can say “search warrant” leading officers straight to Waiswa Bungu. To everyone’s suprise, not only were the stolen crates of beer recovered, but Waiswa was also caught red handed trying to start his own bar with the stolen loot. It was a classic case of “be your own boss”—just with someone else’s merchandise.

In both Ntungamo and Buyende, these sniffer dogs have proven that when it comes to crime solving, sometimes all you need is a good nose and a bit of determination. Their efforts have made them the real MVPs of the Uganda Police Force, showing that even in the most unexpected places, justice will sniff you out, whether you’re sleeping on the job or trying to start a business with stolen beer. You can run from the police, but you can’t hide from their dogs. So, the next time you’re tempted to take something that isn’t yours, just remember—the dog always knows.
