Bushenyi, Uganda — Police in Bushenyi are investigating the death of a 32-year-old man who was found hanging from an avocado tree in Rwanziro Cell, Kashambya Ward, Bitooma Town Council.

The deceased, identified as Kato Junior, 32, is reported to have died by suicide in the early hours of Saturday at around 4:00 a.m.

According to police, the deceased had a history of mental health challenges and had previously been prevented from harming himself on earlier occasions.

The Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, said investigations indicate that Kato left his home on Saturday night after reportedly telling his wife that he had heard someone outside allegedly stealing his matooke.

“When he did not return, his wife later searched for him and discovered his body hanging from an avocado tree in a nearby coffee plantation,” SP Tayebwa said.

Police officers visited the scene, documented evidence, examined the area, and recorded statements from witnesses as investigations continue.

SP Tayebwa confirmed that the body was later handed over to the family to proceed with burial arrangements, while emphasizing that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are still ongoing.

He also urged members of the public to ensure that individuals suspected of experiencing mental health challenges receive timely medical attention to prevent similar tragedies.

“We strongly urge all members of the general public to always ensure family members with suspected mental health issues receive timely medical care to avoid such incidents,” he said.

Police extended condolences to the bereaved family, saying they are praying for the deceased’s soul to rest in peace as investigations continue.
