Concerns have been raised about the sale of coffins near the entrance of Mulago National Referral Hospital. The issue was first brought up by Mr. Newton Amutuheire, a human resource manager at Icon Medical Centre in Wakiso District, on social media, generating a lively discussion.

Some argue that having coffin vendors nearby could be beneficial for grieving families who won’t have to travel long distances when a loved one passes away at the hospital. However, others find this practice insensitive.

Additionally, some individuals prefer to hire funeral service companies that offer coffins and manage the entire burial process.

The coffin dealers set up shop at the intersection of Binaisa and Kafeero Zone roads, adjacent to the New Mulago Gate Road leading to the hospital and morgues. It’s important to note that patients do not use this entrance to access the hospital.

Mr. Ali Male, a psychologist at A-Z Professional Counselling Support Centre in Kampala, expressed concerns about the presence of coffins near the hospital, stating that it can traumatize patients and caregivers. He believes that this sight can lead to a loss of hope and negatively impact healing.

Dr. Herbert Luswata, the secretary-general of Uganda Medical Association (UMA), emphasized the importance of the psychological well-being of patients. While the presence of coffins may not increase the risk of death, it doesn’t create a positive atmosphere for patients.

The coffin sellers declined to comment on the matter, stating that they do not engage with journalists in their line of work.
