(Yumbe) – Mob Severely Injures Prison Escapee in Terego
A notorious fugitive, Kennedy Eyotre, has lost his hand to a mob after being caught attempting to steal a goat in Terego district.
Kennedy Eyotre, also known as Kenia, had been on the run since his escape from Koboko Government Prison in May 2024, where he had been held on remand awaiting a murder trial. Eyotre, a 33 year old man, was well known in his community for his history of criminal activities, including alleged involvement in the murder of one person and the burning of two grass thatched huts in Etoko village, Maracha district, between 2017 and 2023.
After escaping from prison, Eyotre became a fugitive, evading authorities for months. His luck ran out when, on November 16, 2024, he was apprehended by a mob while attempting to steal a goat at around 4 a.m. in Owapi village, Azapi parish, in Terego district. The villagers, furious over his repeated offenses, reacted violently and chopped off his right hand. Eyotre also sustained deep machete cuts on his left leg during the confrontation.
The mob left him severely injured, and he was rushed to Omugo Health Centre IV by police from Terego Central Police Station. He was later transferred to Arua Regional Referral Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. However, the following morning, Eyotre mysteriously disappeared from the hospital, prompting another search for the fugitive.
In the wake of his escape from the hospital, police launched an investigation and arrested six individuals, including Eyotre’s sister, Alicee Wadiko, and her husband, who were suspected of aiding in his escape. Authorities also discovered Eyotre’s severed hand, which his sister had reportedly planned to secretly bury at her maternal uncle’s home in Alarapi village, Alikua sub-county.
Further investigation led to the discovery that Eyotre was receiving treatment at Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital in Yumbe district under a false name, Ismail Ijotre. He was found there being cared for by his mother and a friend. Upon his identification, security forces quickly moved in and transferred him to Arua Government Prison, where he remains in custody.
The authorities have not only apprehended Eyotre but also arrested his mother and the friend who had been assisting him. Eyotre’s lengthy criminal record includes multiple violent crimes, such as cutting three people with a machete between 2017 and 2022, murdering his brother in 2023, and committing arson in September 2024. His escape from Koboko prison and the subsequent incidents have caused widespread fear in the communities he targeted, with many locals fleeing their homes in fear of his violent actions.
Eyotre’s return to prison marks the end of a long search that saw his name added to the list of most wanted criminals in the region. Authorities are now focusing on fully investigating his network and ensuring that those who helped him remain behind bars.
