NTUNGAMO, Uganda — Police in Ntungamo District have registered a fatal road accident that claimed three lives and left six others injured.
The accident occurred on Saturday morning at around 8:30 a.m. along Rwekiniro Road in Kayenje, within the Rwizi region.
The deceased have been identified as Mukiibi Hakim (62), Muhoozi Mustafa, and Muzafari Kireema, all passengers aboard a Fuso truck, registration number UAT 371G.
Preliminary findings indicate that the truck was traveling from Ntungamo towards Rwekiniro, carrying market vendors and their luggage. Upon reaching Kayenje, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.
Three passengers died instantly at the scene, while six others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Authorities are yet to confirm the specific hospitals where the victims were admitted.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Itojo Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Police say the driver fled the scene immediately after the crash and is currently on the run. Efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira attributed the accident to reckless driving and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads to prevent further loss of life.
