Three Ntungamo Police Officers Arrested Over Killing of Suspected Motorcycle Thief

KISORO, Uganda — Three police officers attached to Ntungamo Central Police Station have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old boda boda rider in Kisoro District.

The deceased, Hassan Mwijuke, a resident of Gapfurizo Village in Nyarubuye Sub-county, was shot dead on suspicion of motorcycle theft. Authorities say he had allegedly stolen a motorcycle from neighbouring Kanungu District and had reportedly been in hiding before the incident.

Police have since arrested Police Constable Okedi Muhammad, 25, who is suspected to have fired the fatal shot, along with Corporal Niyonzima Patson and Corporal Abisinguza Gerald, who allegedly assisted in the operation. The three officers are currently detained at Kisoro Central Police Station as investigations into the shooting continue.

The incident reportedly occurred near Gasave Pentecostal Assemblies of God Church. Pastor Evalyst, who was at the church at the time, said he heard a gunshot before noticing armed individuals running away from the area.

“When I heard the gunshot, I later saw armed men running from the area. When I went to check what had happened, I found a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head,” the pastor said.

Residents in the area also reported hearing the gunshot before seeing a vehicle carrying armed men leaving the scene. Moments later, they discovered Mwijuke’s body lying in the middle of the road, which quickly drew a crowd of curious onlookers.

Local residents alerted police in Kisoro, who responded to the scene and transported the body to Kisoro Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.
