Three boda boda riders have been apprehended and are currently being held at the Central Police Station in Kampala. They are facing allegations of participating in an unlawful gathering and throwing stones at traffic officers.
The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, has identified the individuals as Stephen Komakech and Byamukama. The third individual, who remains unnamed, is also in police custody at Jinja Road police station.
According to Owoyesigyire, the incident involving the trio unfolded when approximately 100 boda boda riders blocked off several roads in the Civil Parish of Kampala Central, including Jinja, Kampala, Yusuf Luke, and Mukwano Roads, around 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Subsequently, they began pelting stones at traffic officers who were stationed near the Jinja Road traffic lights. In response, the police swiftly intervened, resulting in the apprehension of the three suspects.
Owoyesigyire explained that further investigation has revealed a potential connection between this incident and a fatal accident that occurred at approximately 8:50 AM along 8th Street. The accident involved a motorcycle with the registration UFP 327T, ridden by Mr. Kimbowa Steven, who tragically lost his life.
The motorcycle was struck by a Hino vehicle with the registration number UBG 834M, which belongs to the Homelkin company, a waste management firm. The driver of the Hino vehicle, identified as Atuhaire Emmy, initially left the accident scene but was subsequently apprehended by Kabalagala Police. Atuhaire has provided a statement regarding the events leading up to the accident.
An ongoing investigation is being conducted to ascertain the precise cause of the accident. Authorities urge all parties involved to remain patient and cooperative throughout this process. The deceased, Steven Kimbowa, has been transported to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, and normal traffic flow has been restored in the affected areas.
