Luweero district headquarters faced a temporary closure due to a brazen robbery perpetrated by unidentified criminals on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. In a troubling turn of events, the incident involved the drugging of two watchmen, who were subsequently incapacitated as the perpetrators made off with numerous computers and documents belonging to the district local government.
The targeted robbery took place under the cover of night, leaving the district reeling from the audacity of the criminals. The two watchmen, entrusted with safeguarding the premises, found themselves victims of a sinister plot. Currently, they are receiving medical treatment at Luweero Hospital, having been rushed there while unconscious.
Luweero district Police commander, John Ojukuna, shed light on the unsettling occurrence, stating that the incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Idd Day. The details provided by Ojukuna painted a picture of a calculated and daring act, which shook the community to its core.
According to one of the watchmen, Alex Avuko, the sequence of events unfolded swiftly as a lone assailant approached him under the guise of seeking directions to a nearby lodge for accommodation. Avuko recounted how the assailant, in a sudden and aggressive maneuver, covered his face with a handkerchief, leading to a struggle between the two.
In the chaos that ensued, Avuko managed to fend off the assailant, but not without consequences. Overwhelmed and disoriented, he eventually succumbed to unconsciousness, only regaining awareness the following morning amidst a gathering crowd at the scene of the crime.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, law enforcement swiftly responded, descending upon the district headquarters to assess the extent of the damage. Their investigation revealed that five offices, including those of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Probation, Resident District Commissioner (RDC), and Procurement, had been forcibly entered.
The aftermath of the robbery drew considerable attention from residents and staff, who converged on the scene, eager to grasp the gravity of the situation. However, the police cordoned off the area to facilitate their inquiry, leaving many onlookers frustrated and bewildered by the unfolding events.
In response to the security breach, authorities took decisive action to safeguard the district headquarters, implementing an indefinite closure and bolstering security measures. This decision, though necessary, disrupted the normal flow of business and inconvenienced numerous individuals, including residents, visitors, and local administration employees.
