The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has issued a strong warning to the public against the creation and use of fake police appeals circulating online and on digital platforms. These fraudulent appeals often claim that the individuals pictured are wanted by the police, which is not the case.

One specific example cited by the UPF is a fake wanted poster of Kigoye Yasin, a former Senior Land Management Officer in Kiryandongo District. This poster, maliciously spread across several digital platforms, was created to tarnish his reputation. The fraudulent poster falsely claims that Yasin is wanted by Kiryandongo Police Station under the falsified references CID Headquarters Kibuli GEF 224/2021 and CRB E107/2024. Additionally, the contact number provided, 0772-765599, is for an individual, not a police station or investigation team.

The UPF emphasizes that all legitimate wanted posters are authorized by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and include the official police logo. The matter of cyber harassment, forgery, and related offenses is currently being investigated by Lugala Central Police Station (CPS) and Kiryandongo CPS.

Furthermore, the UPF has cautioned money lending institutions against using old police appeals and inserting photographs of loan defaulters. This practice is unauthorized and fraudulent. The public is encouraged to report any false witness appeals from money lending institutions to the nearest police station.

The UPF is also concerned about the rising misuse of claims of LGBTQ harassment in visa applications. Applicants are urged to be truthful in their submissions, as false claims or forged documents can lead to visa rejections, refusals, and travel bans.

The UPF is actively investigating the forgery and organized criminal groups behind the production and distribution of falsified documents used to legalize travel or the stay of undocumented individuals in foreign countries. The UPF reiterates its commitment to upholding the integrity of police records and will not tolerate any abuse.

SCP Enanga Fred, the Police Spokesperson, addressed these issues in a statement on June 24, 2024, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to document fraud and fake police appeals.
