Security operatives in Mbarara have apprehended two security guards, Marvin Nabimanya, 17, and Samuel Amutuhaire, 22, both employed by Legit Private Security Company located in Ibanda, following the shooting of Nabimanya Brian, 33, on Easter Sunday evening.
Brian, the son of Professor Godfrey Barigye, a long-serving Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Kabale University and the University of Saint Joseph Nyamitanga, was shot in Karugangama, a suburb of Mbarara City.
The incident occurred when Brian and his companions encountered the two security guards on the premises upon their return from a video hall.
According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region Police Spokesperson, the confrontation arose after Brian and his friends inquired about the guards’ presence in the area. The situation escalated, leading to Nabimanya firing a shot that fractured Brian’s thigh bones.
The suspect fled the scene but was subsequently apprehended on April 22, and a firearm with the serial number UG. PSO 564211869-16588 along with three rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Professor Godfrey Barigye, the victim’s father, has accused Legit Security Company and its management of attempting to conceal the incident, stating that they have not offered any sympathy or attempted to resolve the matter amicably since it occurred.
He further stated that the security guards had become a menace in the community, intimidating residents by loitering with firearms. He is demanding justice and has cautioned the police against mishandling the case, which has become a significant public concern in Mbarara.
Brian was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on the night of the shooting. Halson Kagure, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the facility received the patient through the accident and emergency department.
He noted that the emergency medical team promptly stabilized Brian and that he was later taken to the operating theater for surgery to remove the foreign object and undergo other necessary procedures. Kagure refrained from disclosing further details, stating that the police were best positioned to do so.
While relatives report that Brian remains weak, Kagure assured them that he is out of danger and commended the medical team for their swift emergency response and successful operation.
As police investigations continue, the hospital administration has urged Brian’s caretakers to prioritize his well-being by providing psychosocial support and all necessary care to facilitate his recovery.
