WAKISO, Uganda – Police in Wakiso District are investigating a suspected case of internal theft and negligence after recovering a rifle abandoned in Nkowe Village, Kaliti Parish, Mende Subcounty.
The firearm is believed to have been left behind by private security guards from Fountain Security, who had been deployed to guard Kham Resort, a company involved in welding and brickmaking.
According to police, the incident began when unknown individuals allegedly stole several items from the company, including welding machines, grinders, and electrical wires. The suspects reportedly fled with the stolen equipment to an unknown location.
A breakthrough came when police patrollers intercepted two unidentified individuals carrying some of the stolen property. The suspects abandoned three welding machines, two grinders, and wires before fleeing the scene upon spotting law enforcement officers. All the abandoned items were recovered and secured as evidence.
Police now suspect that the private security guards on duty at the time may have colluded in the theft. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, said:
“Preliminary information suggests that the guards may have stolen the company’s equipment and later abandoned their gun and uniforms in their room to conceal their involvement.”
She added that the abandoned rifle, along with the recovered welding machines and other equipment, has been taken into police custody as part of ongoing investigations.
“The firearm and all recovered property have been secured as exhibits. We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness,” SP Kawala said.
