Kampala University recently hosted its 11th Cultural Gala, where students from various university campuses showcased their diverse talents. The event took place at the University’s Nursing and Health Sciences School in Mutundwe.
A total of 21 student associations representing Kampala University’s five campuses participated in this year’s gala, offering a spectacular display of performances. The event, which ran from September 27th to September 30th, 2023, centered around the theme “Cultural Identity is a Sense of Belonging.”
Students enthusiastically took part in traditional dances, sang the university anthem, performed folk songs and poems, all rooted in their respective cultural values and norms. Additionally, students participated in a modeling segment, featuring casual wear, office attire, dinner wear, creative outfits, and traditional clothing.
The gala received an extra dose of excitement with a performance by Spice Diana, known for her hit song “Siri Regular.” Even the University Vice-Chancellor, Owek.Amb. Al-haj Prof. Badru Kateregga, joined in the dance as students relished every moment.
Nkobazambogo Students Association from Ggaba Campus claimed the top spot and was awarded a bull, while Zambogo Jinja Campus secured second place with a he-goat.
Mr. Katamba M from the Nursing School earned the title of Mr. Culture, with Mr. Wandahwa Emmanuel from Luweero Campus as the second runner-up. In the Miss Culture category, Birungi Linda from Jinja Campus emerged as the winner, and Akankunda Rachel from Luweero Campus took second place. All winners received generous prizes from the university’s management.
The event featured special guest Prof. Ismael Gyagenda Ssimbwa, the Rector of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), along with University Vice-Chancellor Owek.Amb. Al-haj Prof. Badru Kateregga. Prof. Kateregga emphasized the importance of cultural galas in nurturing talents, fostering respect for culture, instilling discipline, and encouraging imagination and creativity. High-ranking university officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr. Wardah Rajab M Gyagenda, the Director of Finance and Marketing, and campus directors, also graced the occasion.
More than 1,000 students from various associations, including Nkobazambogo Students Association Mutundwe Campus, Bamasaba Students Association (BAMASABA) Luwero Campus, South Sudan Students Association (KUSSSA) Ggaba Campus, Teso Students Development Association (KUTESDA) Luwero Campus, Bunyoro Kitara Students Association (KUBUKISA) Luwero Campus, and many others, participated in the event, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.
