On the 1st of March 2024, His Highness Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune was elected at the Akii-Bua stadium, winning by over 1000 votes. At least 2.8 billion shillings is needed to fund and organize the installation of the new “Won Nyaci”/Paramount Chief-elect, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, slated for November 2nd, 2024.
This event has steadily gained momentum from all walks of life within the global cultural setting, including those in the diaspora. Support has extended beyond the Lango Kingdom, with several cultural leaders from Acholi, Kuman, Bunyoro, and Alur kingdoms expressing their support and planning to attend the coronation of the New Won Nyaci of Lango Cultural Foundation, Dr. Okune.
Eng. Dr. Okune was elected on March 1st, 2024, by 1600 delegates drawn from over 120 clans within the Lango tribal setting. The outgoing Won Nyaci, Yosam Odur Ebii, will vacate office by November 1st, 2024, as directed by the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
Dr. Eng. Odongo Okune, 58 years old, who recently served as Executive Director of Uganda Road Fund, will succeed Yosam Odur Ebii on November 2nd, 2024. The coronation committee laid out a budget to support Dr. Odongo Okune’s coronation during a special session chaired by Speaker (Won Tok) Willy Omodo Omodo. Maxwell Akora, Oyima clan head, who also serves as Maruzi county MP in Apac district, outlined the coronation budget sector by sector.
Ajuri County MP and Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, who chairs the coronation committee, rallied the people of Lango to make generous contributions, adding that they also expect support from H.E. the President, government officials, and other development partners or corporate organizations. Obua stated that they will also work to resolve the leadership squabbles that had persisted within the Lango cultural institution.
Meanwhile, Lango Parliamentary Group Chairperson and Kole District Woman MP, Honorable Judith Alyek, noted that her fellow legislators from Lango sub-region are highly prepared to support the coronation of the new Won Nyaci, Dr. Eng. Okune. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend and witness the coronation of the new Won Nyaci of Lango Cultural Foundation. One of the cultural Chiefs of Ker Kwaro Acholi, who preferred anonymity, told The Ankole Times that they are fully prepared to support the new Paramount Chief of Lango Cultural Foundation, Dr. Eng. Moses Odongo Okune.
