Simon Peter Opolot, the leader of the Christ Disciples’ Church (CDC) group that fled Uganda in February, claiming an impending doomsday, has returned to the country. Opolot, a former acting commercial officer in Serere district, left with his wife, Miriam Atayo, who held the position of parish chief in Olio sub-county.
Opolot approached Serere’s chief administrative officer, Richard Bukone, seeking reintegration into work. Bukone had previously written to the police seeking assistance in locating Opolot’s whereabouts, as his departure was without official leave.
Despite his return, the circumstances surrounding Opolot’s reappearance and the fate of the remaining group members remain unclear. Two months ago, one of the elders in the group, William Ojangole, passed away and was buried in Ethiopia.
The mysterious departure of the believers, numbering 273 and hailing from districts like Serere, Ngora, Kumi, Soroti, and Amuria, sparked concerns among family members and local authorities. Their secretive escape involved crossing into Kenya via Karamoja and settling in Nyangatom, a region on the border of southwestern Ethiopia.
The police had initiated an investigation into the matter, and Opolot’s return has reignited questions about the circumstances of their departure and the current status of the group.
