Kyambogo University marked a significant milestone on Monday, March 25, 2024, as it officially received Paidha Primary Teachers’ College from the Ministry of Education and Sports. The handover ceremony, held at Paidha Primary Teachers’ College in Paidha Town Council, Zombo District, was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, Kyambogo University, Zombo District Local Government, and Cultural and Religious Leaders from the Alur Kingdom.
In line with the Ministry’s efforts to implement the National Teacher Policy, Paidha PTC was reconstituted into a Campus of Kyambogo University. This strategic move aims to enhance access to quality tertiary education, particularly for teachers seeking to advance their qualifications.
Ms. Margaret Aluka, the principal of Paidha PTC and Chairperson of the Board of Governors, led the handover ceremony, symbolizing the transition of the institution to Kyambogo University. Vice Chairperson of the University Council, Counsel Sarah Lubega, received the college on behalf of Kyambogo University, signifying the commencement of a new chapter in educational development.
During the handover event, Zombo District LC5 Chairperson Mr. James Oruna Oyullu lauded the initiative, emphasizing its significance in nurturing future leaders within the Alur Kingdom. He highlighted the potential cost savings for parents and guardians, as learners now have access to tertiary education closer to home. Mr. Oyullu pledged the district’s commitment to collaborating with the university to ensure an enabling learning environment.
Ms. Margaret Aluka, in her remarks, expressed gratitude for the long-awaited transition, underscoring the government’s decision to phase out non-core colleges nationwide. She handed over the institution’s inventories to the Ministry of Education and Sports, represented by Assistant Commissioner Mr. Max Okiro, marking a pivotal moment in the transformation process.
Mr. Jalwiny Solomon, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at Paidha Primary Teachers College, reflected on the college’s significance as a source of pride for the Alur community. He expressed satisfaction with the successful handover to Kyambogo University, culminating years of discussions and negotiations.
Honorable Gabriel Okumu, Member of Parliament for Okoro Constituency, emphasized the importance of aligning academic programs with Zombo District’s agricultural potential. He called for vocational courses aimed at equipping students with practical skills to contribute to the region’s agricultural sector, fostering economic growth and self-reliance.
Kermit Emmanuel Angiya II, the clan chief of Paidha Chiefdom, appealed for scholarships to enable local students to access quality education. Similarly, King Phillip Rauni Ularker III, through his representative Prince Vincent Ocaya, requested scholarships for deserving students across the Alur Kingdom, spanning Pakwach, Nebbi, and Zombo districts.
Ms. Grace Atim, Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Zombo District, urged Kyambogo University to prioritize the employment of indigenous individuals, thereby enhancing local participation and ownership in the institution’s operations.
Honorable Simon D’janga, Former State Minister of Energy, emphasized the importance of positive media coverage to promote the university’s visibility and attract prospective students from across the West Nile region.
Assistant Commissioner of Teacher Education in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr. Max Okiro, urged Kyambogo University’s management to collaborate closely with Zombo district stakeholders to ensure seamless operationalization of the new learning centre.
In his closing remarks, Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, Prof. Eli Katunguka, expressed gratitude to the Alur Kingdom and local leaders for their unwavering support. He pledged the university’s commitment to collaborating with the community to achieve regional development goals. Prof. Katunguka highlighted that the Paidha-Zombo learning centre marks Kyambogo University’s third establishment, following similar initiatives in Soroti and Bushenyi. He affirmed the university’s dedication to fulfilling its mandate and contributing to national development.
