Makerere University is undertaking measures to have transcripts ready for distribution during the upcoming 74th graduation ceremony scheduled from January 29th to February 2, 2024. An internal memo from the Academic Registrar, Professor Buyinza Mukadasi, shared with the Makerere University Senate, outlines plans to issue transcripts each day of the week-long ceremony.

The memo encourages prospective graduates to complete their Clearance Forms and submit them to their College Registrars. The university aims to streamline the process, allowing graduates to receive their transcripts promptly. The 2024 slogan emphasizes the goal: “Walk away with your transcript after Freedom Square.” Clearance has been simplified, requiring only two stamps from the University Bursar and Library.

Guild Academic Minister Patience Nambazira mentioned the priority given to the Law school, as they were the first to submit the list of eligible graduates. Nambazira highlighted the positive impact of having transcripts available on graduation day, making the transition to the job market smoother for students.

Responding to inquiries, Professor Mukadasi acknowledged the ambitious task of preparing transcripts on the day of graduation, expressing optimism about the plan. He recognized the significant effort and resources required for such an undertaking, emphasizing the university’s commitment to achieving this milestone.

Despite consistent pledges from Vice Chancellor Professor Nawangwe to have transcripts prepared before graduation, challenges, particularly in obtaining necessary materials, have hindered the realization of this goal. The delays in transcript releases at Makerere University have prompted frustration among graduates, often leading them to opt for testimonials as a more readily available document.

Local media previously reported that Makerere University faced a backlog of over 100,000 uncollected transcripts and certificates, resulting in the institution organizing a two week fare for students to claim their documents.
