Nakasongola District authorities are in a race against time to secure over Shs40 million for the replacement of school pit-latrines submerged during floods from Lake Kyoga and River Kafu between October and December 2023. The affected schools, including Busone Primary School, Kityoba Primary School, River Kafu Primary School, and Kabyuma Primary School, closed a month prematurely in November 2023 due to the collapse of pit-latrines.
Nakitoma Sub-county chairperson, Mr. Godfrey Lutalo, highlighted the urgent need for funds to reconstruct the pit-latrines before the commencement of the First Term on February 5. The floods submerged sections of the school blocks, leading to the collapse of pit-latrines in Nakitoma and Lwampanga sub-counties.
Mr. Sam Kigula, Nakasongola District chairperson, stressed the importance of quick action, stating, “We have less than two weeks to secure the funds to build latrines in three primary schools in Nakitoma and Lwampanga sub-counties.” The district has adopted lined pit-latrines, known for their durability in poor soil conditions, but their construction requires expensive lined bricks to reinforce the pit walls.
Affected schools, such as Busone Primary School, Kityoba Primary School, River Kafu Primary School, and Kabyuma Primary School, have faced challenges since the floods hit in November 2023. Mr. Eddy Ssendikadiwa, a parent at River Kafu Primary School, expressed concern about the safety of classroom blocks and urged district officials to assess their condition before the 2024 academic year.
