Ms. Annet Mugisha, the Commissioner for Teacher Education Training and Development in the Ministry of Education and Sports, encouraged teachers to take pride in their profession and pursue further education to become highly sought-after educators in a ceremony organized by Teachers In Need (TIN) at the American Centre on Friday. She emphasized the importance of changing the negative perception surrounding the teaching profession.

Ms. Mugisha also reminded teachers about the National Teacher Policy 2019, which mandates them to have a minimum qualification of a graduate degree by 2030. The event recognized outstanding teachers, including winners from schools in Uganda and South Sudan. The awardees, totaling six, received certificates and laptops.

Mr. Peter Okware, the director of TIN, explained that the Teachers Awards, initiated in 2022, aim to recognize and motivate teachers, supporting their transformation into informed, inspired, and motivated educators. The decision to award laptops was influenced by the realization that many teachers lack Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills.

One of the awardees, Mr. Stephen Efumbi, a science teacher at St. Savio Junior School Kisubi, expressed the significance of the award and mentioned that the nomination process was fair. He highlighted the challenges some teachers face, such as limited IT skills and access to technology.

Ms. Phoebe Kasoga, the Country Director of Plan International Uganda, pledged ongoing support to TIN, aiming to appreciate and recognize more teachers. The event also had representatives from the American Embassy in Uganda and other distinguished guests in attendance.
