Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, proudly accepted the first-ever Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, also known as the Shanghai Award. This recognition took place at the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Cities Day China Observance, held from October 28 to October 31, 2023.
The Shanghai Award, established by UN-Habitat and the Shanghai government, aims to acknowledge cities worldwide that have shown remarkable progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This year, 54 cities from 16 countries applied for the award, showcasing a diverse mix of urban development levels, incomes, and demographics.
