Despite facing health challenges, Erias Lukwago, visibly unwell, attended the burial ceremony of Sarah Eperu. Lukwago expressed his determination to honor Eperu’s memory, acknowledging her resilience and dedication to the cause they both shared.
Reflecting on his own health struggles, Lukwago revealed that he had been diagnosed with a spinal condition, which caused him considerable discomfort and pain. Despite his physical discomfort, Lukwago drew inspiration from Eperu’s unwavering spirit, emphasizing her commitment to their shared goals even in the face of adversity.
Eperu’s resilience, even in times of illness, left a lasting impression on Lukwago. He recounted instances where she actively participated in various activities, including attending events while using a wheelchair, demonstrating her unwavering determination.
He recounted his own struggles with health issues, emphasizing the importance of enduring discomfort to pay tribute to someone as remarkable as Sarah. Lukwago urged attendees to read a book titled “The Joy and Blessings of Being Who You Are,” suggesting that it encapsulated Sarah’s essence as a fighter.
Amid Lukwago’s speech, he disclosed his recent diagnosis with a spinal condition, detailing the discomfort and pain he experienced. Lukwago explained the medical complexities of his condition, including the compression of nerves and the resulting paralysis and pain. He expressed his reliance on strong painkillers to manage his symptoms, acknowledging their temporary relief despite potential side effects.
Lukwago revealed his apprehension about undergoing surgery to address his condition, considering options such as laser and robotic procedures. However, he lamented the lack of advanced medical facilities in Uganda, indicating his need to explore treatment abroad. Despite his personal struggles, Lukwago remained determined to honor Sarah’s memory and fulfill his responsibilities.
The vigil also witnessed impassioned speeches from other prominent figures, including Dr. Kizza Besigye and Alice Alaso. Besigye condemned attempts by certain individuals to politicize Sarah’s burial and manipulate her family’s decisions. He criticized those who had mistreated Sarah in the past, highlighting their hypocrisy in seeking control over her funeral arrangements.
Ben Eperu, Sarah’s brother, emotionally addressed the audience, recounting the family’s ordeal in safeguarding Sarah’s wishes. He expressed frustration over attempts to relocate Sarah’s body without the family’s consent, alleging interference from political figures. Despite facing intimidation and coercion, Ben remained steadfast in honoring Sarah’s desire to be buried in Katonga.
