The interim head coach of Uganda’s Crested Cranes, Charles Ayeikoh, celebrated a successful start to his tenure as his team secured a 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the Women’s Olympics Football Qualifiers 2024. The match took place at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru, with Kampala Queens’ Catherine Nagadya and Fazila Ikwaput scoring one goal each during the first and second halves.

Uganda’s defense held strong, with a crucial moment occurring in the 30th minute when Cameroon’s Ajara Njoya had an opportunity to equalize but missed from the penalty spot. Njoya’s shot hit the left post, and goalkeeper Vanessa Karungi was swift to recover the rebound.

Throughout the game, Uganda displayed dominance, maintaining a greater share of ball possession compared to their Cameroonian counterparts. Coach Ayeikoh expressed his satisfaction with his players’ mentality after the game. However, he emphasized that the tie is far from decided and called for a continued strong performance in the upcoming return leg scheduled for next week on Tuesday in Douala.

Ayeikoh stated, “I am very excited to win my first game in charge of the Crested Cranes. I enjoyed the mentality of the players; it is not easy to adapt to a new system, but in the few weeks we have been together, they have responded well.”

Ayeikoh’s hopes for the next match will depend on the recovery of midfielder Phiona Nabbumba, who was forced off the field due to injury in the 50th minute.
