Four-Year-Old Boy Killed in Road Crash Involving Speeding Motorcycle in Rukungiri

Rukungiri District, Uganda – A four-year-old boy has died following a road crash involving a speeding motorcycle in Runyamunyu Cell, Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Sub-county.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at around 4:00 p.m. along the Rukungiri–Kihihi road.

According to police reports, the crash involved a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFT 634K, ridden by Ian Amanya, 20, a resident of Mugamba Cell in Rukungiri Municipality. The deceased was identified as Johnvian Owomugisha, the son of Denis Tukwasibwe, a resident of Runyamunyu Cell.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcyclist was heading from Rukungiri to Kihihi while carrying two milk cans. He was reportedly riding at high speed when he encountered the boy crossing the road. Despite attempts to avoid the child, the motorcycle struck him, resulting in both the rider and the boy falling.

The child was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead en route.

Police officers visited and documented the scene of the accident. The motorcycle was taken to Rukungiri Central Police Station and is pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). A postmortem examination has also been conducted.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, attributed the crash to overspeeding and careless pedestrian behavior, adding that investigations are ongoing.
