Hon. Ojaman Simon Peter, an advisor to His Highness Paul Sande Emolot-Etomaileng, the Iteso cultural leader, has been appointed to lead the mobilization efforts for the creation of a new administrative unit, the Usuk District.
The appointment was made during a meeting held in Okuda village, Abarata, in Ongongoja sub-county, chaired by Mr. Odeke Opoonent, a close relative of Vice President Jessica Alupo.
Approximately 80 Usuk elders attended the meeting and expressed their strong support for the creation of the new district. They believe that the time is ripe for Usuk to become an independent district, separating from Ngariam and Toroma Counties.
“We are ready to engage in radio discussions and public gatherings to advocate for the creation of Usuk District,” said one member at the meeting. “We were promised a district earlier, but it was given to Katakwi. Now is the right time for us.”
Usuk is a constituency comprising five sub-counties: Ongongoja, Okulonyo, Usuk, Guyaguya, and Usuk Town Council. According to the 2021 election data, the constituency has approximately 17,000 voters.
The meeting was attended by several prominent local leaders, including District Councilor for Ongongoja and Vice Chairman of Katakwi District Hon. Ecuman Joseph, Vice LC3 Okulonyo Ronald Ongorok, sub-county councilors from Ongongoja, LC2s, LC1s, and other opinion leaders.
One of the key discussions was the need to engage local leaders from Ngariam and Toroma Counties to garner their support for the creation of Usuk District.
The meeting, which began at 10:00 AM, lasted for approximately five hours. Vice Chairman Joseph Ecuman closed the meeting, stating that he would inform LC5 Geoffrey Omolo about the recent developments.
