Recognizing the challenges athletes face upon retirement, the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has taken a proactive approach to address these issues by launching a life-skilling program. This initiative aims to equip athletes with the necessary skills for a successful life after their sporting careers.
The program kicked off with the active participation of more than 80 athletes from Kampala. Distinguished guests, including Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) President Donald Rukare and National Council of Sports (NCS) Assistant General Secretary David Katende, graced the occasion. The event, held at Copper Chimney Lugogo, focused on enlightening athletes about the concept of dual career balance, covering areas such as education, employment, athletics, and entrepreneurship.
Donald Rukare, expressing his commendation, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in empowering athletes. He encouraged UAF to extend these seminars nationwide, ensuring that all athletes are equipped with the necessary knowledge to navigate life beyond sports.
Beatrice Ayikoru, the General Secretary of UAF, emphasized the federation’s commitment to witnessing athletes excel not only on the track but also in their personal and professional lives. She stressed the goal of preventing athletes from facing financial struggles after retirement, aiming to mold them into individuals leading fulfilling lives and serving as inspiration for future generations.
The success of the life-skilling program in Kampala has set the stage for the next event scheduled to take place in Kapchorwa on the 12th of this month. This ongoing commitment by UAF underscores the federation’s dedication to preparing athletes for a successful and well-rounded life beyond their sporting careers. The program serves as a model for other federations, encouraging them to prioritize the holistic well-being of their athletes.
