Kanungu Worker Accused of Cutting Off Employer’s Hand in Panga Attack

Police in Kanungu District have launched a manhunt for a casual labourer accused of severing his employer’s hand during a violent confrontation over alleged theft.

The suspect, identified only as Brian, had been hired by Eriabu Aineplani to burn charcoal at Omukibaare Village in Kayungwe Sub-county. Authorities say the incident occurred on April 18, 2026, at around 1:00 p.m., after the employer reportedly received information that the worker had been stealing part of the charcoal.

According to police, Aineplani went to the work site and questioned the suspect in the presence of other workers. The situation quickly escalated, with the suspect allegedly turning violent and attacking his employer using a panga. In the process, Aineplani sustained a severe injury to his hand.

The victim was rushed to Kambuga Hospital, where he is currently admitted and receiving treatment.

A case of attempted murder has since been registered at Nyakabungo Police Station following a report filed by area chairperson Turinawe Frank. Police have recorded statements from eyewitnesses and recovered the suspected weapon, which has been retained as evidence.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to his arrest as investigations continue.

The incident has heightened concern among local residents, drawing attention to disputes in informal work arrangements and the need for conflict resolution mechanisms within rural communities.
