Kasese Municipal Member of Parliament, Hon. Ferigo Kambale, donated over six hundred kilograms of maize to farmers in Kasese Municipality on Monday.

Ferigo stated that the maize was obtained through lobbying in parliament to benefit the local community during this planting season.

Speaking to our reporter shortly after distributing maize to the beneficiaries at his office in Kasese town, Ferigo said each farmer is to receive five kilograms of maize.

He cautioned farmers against selling the maize, as they are meant to improve food security at the household level.

Ms. Jozephine Mukwenda and Mbabazi Specioza described the donation as timely.

Earlier, Ferigo appealed to the local community to set aside political differences and focus on development.

Mr. Asanairi Bukanywa, the Kasese Municipal Agricultural officer, reiterated his previous advice to farmers, asking them to make timely preparations of their gardens to improve the quality and quantity of crops.

Mr. Bukanywa stated that one of the biggest challenges frustrating crop production in Kasese Municipality is farmers sticking to their traditional farming methods instead of adopting the technically tested methods of agriculture.

Mr. Bukanywa, who warned against burning grasses, advised farmers to prepare their gardens, apply fertilizers if possible, and mulch to improve the fertility of their gardens in preparation for planting while awaiting rain in September.

He added that his office is open to any farmer willing to consult him about agricultural matters.

Kasese district continues to experience extremely hot weather as farmers hope for rain to fall so that they can begin planting.
