KCCA Takes Charge of Infrastructure and Hygiene as Ugandan Government Sets Stage for Major International Summits
In a move to prepare for the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the third South (G77+ China) summits scheduled for January 2024, the Ugandan government has appointed nine officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). The NAM summit, with an expected attendance of 120 member countries, will run from January 15 to 19, 2024, while the third South Summit will take place from January 21 to 23 at the Speke Resort and Convention Centre in Munyonyo.
Uganda will be assuming the chairmanship of NAM from Azerbaijan. According to Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent envoy to the United Nations, the NAM conference will be the largest conference hosted by the country since the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The NAM, consisting of 120 countries that are not aligned with any major power bloc, is the second-largest grouping of states globally after the United Nations. It was established to counterbalance the power dynamics of the Cold War.
The KCCA task force, led by Eng. David Luyimbazi, has been appointed by the National organizing committee, headed by Lucy Nakyobe, the head of Public Service. Luyimbazi’s task force will oversee transport, infrastructure, public health, and enforcement, with the support of seven other KCCA directors.
The KCCA task force has already initiated road reconstruction and infrastructure improvements in areas where the summits will be held, including Ggaba, Cape Munyonyo, and Makindye division. It is working on pavement and drainage systems to ensure a well-organized city for visitors.
Public health is also a priority, with inspections of accredited hotels to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and the installation of dustbins along project corridors to enforce proper waste disposal and hygiene.
Infrastructure projects, supported by a release of UGX 60 billion from the Central Government, will involve the reconstruction and maintenance of roads like Mukwano Road, Press House Road, Tank Hill, Cape Road, and Prince Badru Kakungulu Road. Landlords and religious institutions will be encouraged to contribute to the city’s cleanliness and organization.
