Kigezi Youth Leaders Condemn Intimidation Ahead of NRM Elections

Youth leaders from the Kigezi sub-region have come together to condemn the ongoing intimidation circulating on social media ahead of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Youth Elections.

Led by Bob Atwine, the Rukiga District NRM Youth League Chairperson, the leaders voiced strong opposition to what they described as growing intimidation tactics employed by some aspirants vying for national youth leadership positions.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kabale Municipality, Atwine urged delegates to stand firm against fear and coercion, stressing that no one should be intimidated during the electoral process.

“Everyone has the right to support and vote for a candidate based on their manifesto and leadership abilities,” Atwine stated.

He also dismissed claims made by certain aspirants that they are backed by the state, calling such assertions “completely false and condemnable.” He encouraged the youth to prioritize electing competent and visionary leaders, rather than being influenced by fear-mongering.

Other youth leaders echoed Atwine’s concerns. Allan Atwijukye called on senior NRM leaders to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, while Andrew Niwasasira appealed to the NRM Electoral Commission to publicly condemn any threats directed at youth delegates.

The elections are scheduled to take place from August 20 to 22, during the Central Executive Committee (CEC) meetings, followed by the National Executive Council (NEC) gathering.

As tensions rise, NRM youth leaders are increasingly demanding transparency, non-interference, and strict adherence to the party’s democratic principles.
