RUBANDA, Uganda — Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson Ampeire Stephen Kasyaba has vowed to fight to regain control of Karukara Weekly Market.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for Hamurwa Town Council LC3 councillors last week, Kasyaba said Karukara Market is a major source of revenue for Hamurwa Town Council and the entire district.
He added that elected leaders would not sit in office and watch the market being taken over by an individual.
Kasyaba predicted that the district could lose the case in the Supreme Court but vowed to involve the President to ensure the market remains under district control.
He said the market must be rescued so that people have a place to sell commodities such as cattle, tobacco, cash crops, clothes, and other goods.
He blamed the previous regime for taking things for granted, which resulted in the district losing the case in court.
Kasyaba noted that when he was elected district chairperson in 2021, the district had already lost the case. However, his administration challenged the ruling and won.
He stressed that government programmes such as PDM, Emyooga, UWEP, and YLP cannot lift people out of poverty without Karukara Weekly Market operating effectively.
